Osborne's adaptation of Wilde's novel for the stage opened at the Greenwich Theatre on 13th February 1975. It received mixed reviews. Whitebrook noted that 'when the play was televised eighteen months later, Martin Amis observed in the New Statesman that if Wilde had thought the idea dramatic, he would doubtless have been the first to write a play about it' (Whitebrook, p. 299).
