Vintage official reproduction poster designed for London Transport featuring images of tradesmen, including the street-seller of grease-removing composition, the London sweep, the street-seller of Birtds' nests, the baked potato man, long-song seller, the London costermonger, scene in Petticoat-Lane, Old Sarah the Hurdy-Gurdy player, Jack Black Her Majesty's Ratcatcher, with the text separating the images - You may no longer buy a Thrush's nest for 2d from a bare-footed Gypsy in Leicester Square, as you might have done 100 years ago in Mayhew's London. Nor can you buy seven feet of song from a lugubrious Long-Song Seller. But 1965 is no less colourful. From Petticoat Lane to Portobello Road, from the Angel to the Elephant, Cockney good humour and salty friendliness defy the stereotyping of the 20th Century. Try anu street market for the authentic voice of London. Good condition, pinholes, creasing Country of issue: UK, designer: John Finnie, size (cm): 102x64, year of printing: 1960s.
