Oil on canvas cm. 98x73Il dipinto mostra un interessante incrocio di influenze, in cui la suggestione caravaggesca si può leggere chiaramente la suggestione caravaggesca, ma nei termini di una prevalente nota naturalista, originalmente combinata con spunti emiliani di ordine più classicista e inflessioni coloristiche di marca veneta. Un certo arcaismo sembra ricondurre a un artista formatosi ancora sul finire del Cinquecento e più interessato all'intensità espressiva che alla rifinitura calligrafica in senso accademico. Il più vivido termine di riferimento può essere individuato nella pittura di Orazio Borgianni e in sue opere come il Santo Domenicano già in collezione Diaz Cordobés di Madrid, o il San Carlo Borromeo della chiesa di San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane a Roma.
