A rare printing by Richard Miller, proprietor of ‘The Juvenile Library’ – ‘The Ladder of Matrimony, beautifully ornamented with figures, humorously representing the different stages of courtship and marriage, plain1s, coloured 1s 6d’. In two parts forming an ‘A’ form step ladder pierced at the top to be united by two ribbons now lacking, the foot of one side of the ladder, ‘Richard Miller, Old Fish Street, London’, hand coloured, each section, 15.5 x 6.6cms.                ± Miller advertised The Ladder of Matrimony in ‘Military Heroes That Have Distinguished Themselves During the Late Wars’ (the Napoleonic Wars), in 12 pages of adverts headed ‘Catalogue of Books and Fancy Articles’. Miller listed it under the general heading of ‘Conversation Cards’, as described above. While the volume is undated, it must date to the period 1815-1820, Miller also advertised ‘Satin Medallion Pin Cushions’, which often featured portraits and maps, a number of which have appeared in our sales.               The Victoria and Albert Museum has just one part of the ladder in its collection (the part without the printers inscription but with the ribbon ties present), and erroneously states it to be a ‘Greeting Card’ published by Ackermann, c1814-1818, and bearing a trade label ‘R. Ackermann ….’ (Accession Number E.2311-1953), they also hold a cut paper and watercolour example by an amateur based on Miller’s design.              Given the printing of Hones ‘The Queen’s Matrimonial Ladder’ offered as the previous lot was first published in 1820, it seems likely that Miller capitalised on the success of Hones ‘Matrimonial Ladder’, which ran to over 44 editions in its first year of production by producing his own version which had greater longevity, lacking reference to Queen Caroline, both ladders are extremely rare to find.                                                                                                  The discerning eye collection
