Follower of Paulus Potter (Dutch, 1625-1654), Dutch (19th Century) A Shepherd with Livestock and a Woman Milking a Cow signed 'P. Potter' (lower right); with a wax collection seal and three gallery stamps (on the reverse) oil on panel 35.5 x 31.0 cm (14 x 12 3/16 in). framed 48.0 x 43.5 x 3.5 cm (19 x 17 1/8 x 1 3/8 in). Footnotes: Provenance A private Münster, Germany, collection, by 1970, as attributed to Paulus Potter (1625-1654). Sale, Lempertz, Cologne, November 23, 1978, lot 225. Sale, Christie's New York, June 18, 1982, lot 24, as by Pieter Potter (c. 1597/1600-1652). Sale, Sotheby's Parke Bernet, New York, March 24, 1983, lot 1, as by Pieter Potter. A Newport, Rhode Island, estate. N.B. This work appears to be an amalgamation of a number of different motifs derived from various works by Paulus Potter (1625-1654). The lying cow, for instance, resembles the cow in Liggende koe bij een hek from Het Bullenboekje (Rijksmuseum, RP-P-1889-A-14859). The man in the grey may be derived from the shepherd seen in The Bull (Mauritshuis, Netherlands, no. 136), while the lying goat could be modelled on the goat in The Young Thief (British Royal Collection, RCN 400527). The cow being milked resembles the cow in Boerenfamilie met vee (Alte Pinakothek, Germany). The overall composition is very similar to Jonge melkmeid met koeien voor een schuur (State Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg). This work has been examined via digital images by the Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD). RKD scholars suggest that this work was most likely produced by a 19-century follower of Paulus Potter.
