LILLIAN DABE (20th/21st Century) Untitled, 2023 signed, titled, numbered and dated (on the reverse) inkjet print 16 x 20 in. 40.6 x 50.8 cm. This work is number three from the edition of ten, plus three artist's proofs. Footnotes: Provenance Courtesy of the artist Artist statement: Born and raised in Los Angeles, Lillian grew up around set facades and costume houses, as both her parents work in the entertainment industry. These early childhood memories and dreams permeate her art practice and are retold under the context of how women are depicted and understood in film. In her current series, Lillian and her mother are the central figures in the narrative. The work addresses inheritance, more specifically, learned behaviors of femininity, and the objectifying idea that the younger model replaces the older model. In this formulation, because of inevitable aging, every starlet is inherently tragic. Thus, the work is ripe with a sense of unnerving waiting or stillness; the death of youth, missed opportunity, an aging starlet, jealousy of motherhood and mortality.
