A GOLD-DAMASCENED IRON CASE AND COVER 15th/16th century The fluted shaft finely damascened with gold in the form of lotus flowers and foliate scrolls. 34.5cm (13 1/2in) long. (2). Due to the inconvenience of transportation at the time, horses were often used as the primary means of transport. Cases, as the present lot, were convenient to carry and helped protect the safety of letters or manuscripts. See a related iron inlaid with gold case and cover, 15th/16th century, in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (acc. no. 1992.257.1). Buyers' Premium and Charges

Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
