LEWIS AND CLARK EXPEDITION. THWAITES, REUBEN GOLD, EDITOR. 1853-1913. Original Journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1904. 8 volumes including atlas. 8vo. Frontispiece portraits of Lewis and Clark in volumes 1 and 2 respectively with other facsimile manuscript frontispieces to other volumes except atlas, 54 folding maps and charts on 62 sheets in atlas. Original red buckram, spines lettered and decorated in gilt, gilt decoration of the letters L and C to covers, edges gilt. Minor rubbing, some offsetting from frontispiece in volume 2 to title page, minor tears to folding maps. Published to celebrate the centennial of the Lewis and Clark expedition, Thwaite assembled the most complete and impressive publications relating to Lewis and Clark. The present octavo version was issued alongside a deluxe limited folio edition of 50 copies on imperial japan paper and a limited folio of 200 copies printed on Van Gelder hand-made paper.
