Townsend, an ornithologist and physician, made some of the first descriptions of birds of the American West, based on observations he made while accompanying the exploring party led by Nathaniel J. Wyeth in 1834. The appendix contains Townsend's natural history notes: lists and descriptions of quadrupeds and birds observed on the journey and made available to Audubon for his later publications.
