TOWNSEND, JOHN KIRK. 1809-1851. Narrative of a Journey across the Rocky Mountains, to the Columbia River, and a Visit to the Sandwich Islands.... Philadelphia: Henry Perkins, 1839. 8vo (233 x 142 mm). Publisher's plum-colored cloth stamped in blind, titled in gilt on spine. Sunned, wear to extremities, adhesive stains to upper cover, dampstaining to lower quarter of leaves throughout, ink ownership inscription on front free endpaper, scattered foxing. FIRST EDITION. Townsend, an ornithologist and physician, made some of the first descriptions of birds of the American West, based on observations he made while accompanying the exploring party led by Nathaniel J. Wyeth in 1834. The appendix contains Townsend's natural history notes: lists and descriptions of quadrupeds and birds observed on the journey and made available to Audubon for his later publications.
