Publisher's red cloth, volume 2 rebacked, retaining original spine, minor chipping to spine ends of volume 1. FIRST EDITION, A PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE EDITOR TO 'MISS J. BAYARD,' in the original cloth. Stewart was an English officer and ardent sportsman who spent five years (1832-37) adventuring west of the Mississippi amongst the various tribes. During a stay in New Orleans, where he replenished his funds by speculating in cotton, Stewart met the young artist A.J. Miller who accompanied him on his next trip to the Rocky Mountains.
