A BRITISH PRIVATE CONTRACT LIGHT DRAGOON CARBINE, mid-18th century. 32 1/2 in., .65 caliber barrel with London Company of Gunmakers proof marks and barrel maker's mark crown over 'WS' on the left side of the breech; slightly convex lock plate with double line border engraving marked 'I/LUDLAM' below the pan; walnut stock; Land Pattern-style furniture including butt plate with long stepped tang, thumb piece with engraved owl heraldic device, trigger guard with acorn finial, convex side plate with long tail and iron sling bar and ring, and three sheet brass rammer pipes, later wood rammer. Overall lg. 47 in. Condition: Barrel toned to mottled brown, lock toned to mottled gray/brown, stock is split at the upper rammer pipe, has scattered insect holes in the lock area; brass toned to yellow, action functions properly.
