A 37TH REGIMENT DUBLIN CASTLE PATTERN 1770 SERGEANT OF GRENADIERS CARBINE, 1770s. 41 7/8 in., .69 caliber barrel with ring decoration at the breech and Tower Ordnance-style proof marks engraved on the top along with '37th'; convex lock plate with double line border engraving and pointed tail marked 'DUBLIN/CASTLE' and crown over 'GR' and crowned broad arrow mark below the pan; walnut stock with raised plateau around the breech plug tang; brass furniture including a butt plate with a stepped and pointed tang, oval thumb piece engraved 'G/4', trigger guard with acorn finial, flat 'S' side plate, brass nose cap, three rammer and an entry pipe, sling swivels, later steel rammer with button head. Overall lg. 57 3/4 in. Condition: Reconverted barrel toned to dark brown; lock reconverted; stock is spliced between the third and entry pipes, small wood chips at the rear of the lock mortice; brass toned to deep yellow, action functions properly. Footnotes: Note The 37th Regiment was issued a new set of arms from Dublin Castle on October 14, 1775. It arrived in North America on May 3, 1776, landing at Cape Fear, North Carolina. The regiment took part the Battle of Long Island in August of that year and the capture of New York in on September 15-16. In December 1776 the regiment was detached from the British main force to join the attack on Rhode Island. In 1777 the 37th took part in the Battles of Brandywine and Germantown. After the Revolution, the 37th were among six British regiments sent to garrison Nova Scotia through 1789.
