A BRITISH 7TH REGIMENT (ROYAL FUZILEERS) PATTERN 1756 LONG LAND SERVICE MUSKET WITH BAYONET, 1760s. 46 in., .78 caliber British Ordnance barrel with Tower Ordnance proof marks and 'FG' barrel maker's mark at the breech, the top engraved '7 REGT'; British Ordnance lock with double line border engraving, pointed tail engraved 'GALTON/1762' and engraved with a crown over 'GR' and marked with a crowned broad arrow below the pan, the inside marked 'FG'; walnut stock with storekeeper's mark on the butt and inspector's mark below the trigger guard and the left side of the butt carved 'LLME'; brass furniture of proper form for the pattern, the thumb piece engraved '9/7' with steel rammer with button head and plain end; with later bayonet. Overall lg. 61 3/4 in. Condition: Barre is toned to brown and reconverted; lock is reconverted; stock is spliced between the third and entry pipes, minor chips, dings and dents. Footnotes: Provenance Collection of Dr. Douglas Sirkin. James D. Julia Auction, Fall 2013, Lot 2623. Note The 7th Regiment of Foot or Royal Regiment of Fuzileers arrived in Canada April 1773. Most of the regiment was captured by Americans at St Johns on November 3, 1775. The regiment was exchanged at New York City and participated in battles at Fort Clinton and Fort Montgomery, New York, in 1777. It wintered in Philadelphia and retreated through the Jerseys, returning to New York and stationed at Fort Independence. Participated in the raids on Fairfield and New Haven during the summer of 1779, then wintered 1779-1780 on Staten Island, NY. During the spring of 1780 the regiment was sent to Charleston, South Carolina, and the following year much of the regiment was destroyed or captured at Cowpens along with 71st Regiment in 1781. The remainder of the regiment returned to New York and returned to England in 1783.
