A fine and rare gilt and engraved brass presentation inkwell timepiece 'The pen is mightier than the sword.' Thomas Cole, London retailed by Hunt and Roskell, No.1193 The spherical inkwell with ball finial over a stepped lid engraved with radiating bands to a beaded border, the lower body terminating in a socle to a twelve-petalled base engraved with floral motifs on a hatched ground, the presentation inscription to the front reads FROM CHARLES KEAN, TO WILLIAM CRAMPTEN ESQr. AS A TOKEN OF REGARD AND GRATITUDE FOR THE MANY HIGHLY ESTEEMED SERVICES BESTOWED ON HIM AND HIS FAMILY THROUGHOUT A SERIES OF YEARS JULY 1859 The underside of the base numbered 1193 27 and with three button feet. The lid opening to reveal the dial and a glass inkwell. Set in the original finely fitted blue-vlevet covered display case together with a gilt brass engraved sword and pen. The sword with engraved striped scabbard opening up to reveal the plain blade (letter opener), the pen surmounted by an eagle with outstretched wings on a double scroll, the tapering body terminating in a blued steel changeable nib, all protected by a five-panel glazed cover with ebonised frame, on a moulded edge and ball feet. The 2.5inch silvered Roman dial signed for the retailers above XII within the engraved dotted minute band, the centre decorated with anthemion and floral engraving on a hatched ground, repeat numbered under the mask 1193, with good blued steel fleur de lyse hands. The eight day movement with three quarter pillar plate signed THOS. COLE, LONDON, NO.1193 with gold balance to the lever escpment The outer case 31cms (12ins) by 28cms (11ins) Footnotes: A similar inkwell, unsigned and in a plainer case was sold in these rooms June 2021 from the collection of Dr Gene Antelis. Buyers' Premium and Charges
For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:
Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.
VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
