A Chita Rivera and Dick Van Dyke Pair of Photographs Including a graphite on illustration board portrait of Chita, sight 8 x 12 in.; and two framed photographs of Chita with Dick van Dyke. On April 14, 1960, Chita Rivera and Dick Van Dyke appeared to great acclaim in the Broadway musical, Bye Bye Birdie, about an Elvis Presley-type singer named Conrad Birdie whose draft into the army sends his fans, particularly the females, into a frenzy. The play opened at the Martin Beck Theatre and ran for 607 performances. As Albert and Rosie, Chita and Van Dyke delighted audiences with their chemistry; the two became lifelong friends as a result of their collaboration. The play received a Tony® Award for Best Musical, Van Dyke received the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical, and Chita was nominated for Featured Actress in a Musical. Van Dyke appeared in the 1963 film version of the play (which was also successful), but the part of Rosie was played by Janet Leigh. In 1973-74, Chita appeared as the character of Connie Richardson in 7 episodes of The New Dick Van Dyke Show television show, which unfortunately was canceled. In 2006, the audience went crazy when Van Dyke appeared as a special guest star on the Broadway stage with Chita during 4 performances of her musical, Chita Rivera: The Dancer's Life. Through the years, they appeared together on talk shows, sharing stories about their friendship and career highlights, and at many social events. At news of Chita's death in 2024, Van Dyke posted on his Instagram account, 'I loved her! She was the best that ever was! My Rosie, Chita Rivera.' Lot to be sold without reserve.
