A Chita Rivera Costume Plan from the 1954 Production of Can-Can Autograph Manuscript on 20 lined notecards bound with a ring fastener at upper left, notes by Chita Rivera and another for Can-Can costumes and backstage rituals, 3 x 5 inches, some dampstaining throughout. A costume plan helps an actor and costumer track what costumes are worn when, and with what accessories, during a show. This costume plan is from Chita's 1954 appearance in the chorus of Cole Porter's Can-Can. Chita missed the original auditions for the show because she was touring in the chorus of Call Me Madam, then was given the opportunity to try out for choreographer Michael Kidd when one of the original dancers dropped out. It came down between Chita and another dancer, and while Chita impressed Kidd, he told her she lost out on the role because she was not able to fit into the shoes of the dancer who dropped out. Chita was crushed--it was her first major disappointment in the theater--but Kidd promised her that she would be first in line for an opening in either Can-Can or Guys and Dolls, which he also choreographed. Soon she did get the call for Guys and Dolls, and just a few months after that, she found herself replacing another dancer in Can-Can. The first 15 pp of this document were prepared by someone other than Chita, and include a step-by-step procedure for what to do upon arrival at the theater each day: heat water for tea, put on mics, put on first costume, second costume, enter SL, etc. The final five leaves are in Chita's hand, and include a list of the different costumes and the acts in which they appear and a breakdown of the items in each costume (including prop money, '$1.00 over each boob,' she writes).
