STEPHENS (IAN) Photographic archive of portraits and views in 1950s northern Pakistan, Waziristan and Kashmir, including Mahsuds, Sikhs, air and naval personnel, upwards of 400 gelatin silver prints (some duplicates), some with studio stamp, ink or printed, caption on the verso, mostly 195 x 160mm.; and approximately 100 colour negatives of similar scenes and portraits, in annotated packets, [c.1950-1955]; together with some correspondence, a corrected typescript of Stephen's article 'Mahsuds', and copies of Stephens' books Horned Moon, and Pakistan (quantity) Footnotes: Ian Stephens (1903-1984) was from 1942-1951 editor of the Indian newspaper The Statesmen, after which he continued to write on the region, travelling extensively in the region which formed the basis of his books Horned Moon. An Account of a Journey through Pakistan, Kashmir and Afghanistan (1953) and Pakistan (1963), both illustrated with his own photographs. The archive of his photographs includes some views of the mountains and landscapes of Waziristan, a series on the Pakistan air force, but the majority are portraits of peoples he met, including Sikhs of the Indian army, naval personnel, Mahsud villagers, etc. Amongst printed materials is a typed letter (May 1951) from the press attaché of the Office of the High Commission for Pakistan to Stephens noting 'Your photographs are now with us and needless to say they are extremely good...'. Buyers' Premium and Charges
For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:
Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.
VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
