VISCHER (EDWARD) Vischer's Pictorial of California, Landscape Trees and Forest Scenes Grand Features of California Scenery Life Traffic and Customs, 101 mounted albumen prints (mostly after artworks by Edward Vischer, of which 60 landscape views, 26 trees and forest scenes, and 14 'grand features' of California, and a map), captions and text printed in red, some toning and occasional faint spots, contemporary green half morocco, gilt title on upper cover, g.e., worn, boards detached [Cowan II, 662], large 4to (343 x 300mm.), San Francisco, printed by Joseph Winterburn & Co, 1870 Footnotes: Cowan notes that copies of Vischer's work often vary in the number of plates, and the number of mounted plates in each given set is rarely the same. Bibliographers have concluded that the book appeared with between 100 or 120 plates. In this copy, the first section ('Californian Landscape') features sixty photographs including scenes in forests and mining camps, the Sierra Nevada, Lake Tahoe, Truckee, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, several California missions (of great interest to Vischer), Donner Lake, the San Bernardino mountains and more. The second section includes twenty-five photographs of trees and forest scenes (giant sequoias and redwoods, the Mammoth tree grove, Cypresses, etc.), plus the additional pictorial title, but without the 'The Remarks' found in some copies. The final section includes 'Grand Features and Characteristic Ranges of Californian Scenery', featuring views of the Yosemite Valley, the Sierra Nevada and Mount Shasta. Provenance: 'T.H. Jackson Esq. with Mr and Mrs Meyer's compliments', early inscription on the title-page. Buyers' Premium and Charges
For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:
Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.
VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
