JAMAICA [LONG (EDWARD)] The History of Jamaica. Or the General Survey of the Antient and Modern State of that Island, 3 vol. bound in 2, 16 engraved maps and plates (most folding), half-page engraved vignette at head of introduction, some off-setting on folding maps, and onto the title-pages, ink stamp of 'John Stirling. Gang Forward' in volume 2, contemporary calf, rebacked in calf retaining original red and green gilt morocco spine labels, 4to, T. Lowndes, 1774--RENNY (ROBERT) An History of Jamaica. With Observations... to which is added an illustration of the advantages, which are likely to result from the abolition of the slave trade, lacks map (supplied in facsimile), some toning and occasional light damp-staining, pp.329-330 strengthened with paper at inner margin just touching letters, modern half calf, 4to, J. Cawthorn, 1807--[STEWART (JOHN)] An Account of Jamaica, and its Inhabitants. By A Gentleman, Long Resident in the West Indies, some spotting, contemporary half calf, rebacked preserving the original spine, 8vo, Longman, Hurst, 1808--BRIDGES (GEORGE WILSON) The Annals of Jamaica, FIRST ISSUE, light spotting, ownership inscription of Rev. B. Woodyard (1846) and library stamp inside upper covers (with ink shelfmark on verso of titles), contemporary red morocco gilt, joints repaired, spine darkened, 8vo, John Murray, 1827, FIRST EDITIONS (6) Footnotes: First editions of four important late eighteenth and early nineteenth surveys of Jamaica, including Edward Long's 'most influential work... [which] is an invaluable vade-mecum to the social, economic, and political life of Britain's largest and wealthiest West Indian colony. The book combines encyclopaedic detail with polemics and propaganda', and which cemented the author's 'reputation as the leading contemporary commentator on the eighteenth-century British Caribbean' (ODNB). Long (1734–1813), sugar plantation owner and a member of the Jamaican assembly, argued for better schools, improved military defences, a stronger militia, and further white immigration in Jamaica, as well as being a strong pro-slavery advocate. Buyers' Premium and Charges
For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:
Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.
VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
