Circle of George Francis Lyon (British, 1796-1832) 'View of H.M. Ships Fury and Hecla at Igloolick, 1822' indistinctly signed and dated in pencil 'W Mackie Pinxt/1822' (to margin lower left); inscribed as titled (to margin lower centre) watercolour on paper back of an old marine chart 18.4 x 25.4cm (7 1/4 x 10in). unframed Footnotes: The present work depicts a scene during the second attempt at the Northwest Passage by William Edward Parry, which began in April 1821 and ended in October 1823. The crews of HMS Fury and HMS Hecla wintered in Igloolick in 1822 and were the first Europeans to make contact with the inhabitants there. In 1824, Parry published his account of the expedition in Journal of a Second Voyage for the Discovery of a North West Passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific performed in the Years 1821-22-23. Included in the book is an illustration of HMS Fury and HMS Hecla at Igloolick, which was engraved by Edward Francis Finden after a drawing by Captain George Francis Lyon, commander of HMS Hecla. The present watercolour is uncannily similar to the illustration with the positioning of the two ships and the immediate landscape. However, whilst the present work depicts a group of Inuits in the foreground, the illustration shows members of the crew playing a game of cricket. Given the faint signature below the watercolour, one wonders who 'M. Mackie' is. Perhaps a member of the crew, but unfortunately we cannot find any listing of a 'Mackie' being associated with the expedition.
