Gallet. A stainless steel manual wind chronograph wristwatch with world time zones Model: Flying Officer Chronograph Date: Circa 1940 Movement: Jewelled manual wind Dial: Silvered Case: Brushed and polished round Strap/Bracelet: Associated black woven fabric Buckle/Clasp: Associated steel buckle Signed: Case, dial & movement Size: 34mm Footnotes: The first Gallet Flying Officer Chronographs were introduced in the 1940s and were 'rumoured to have been developed upon specific request by Harry S Truman for the United States Army Air Forces'. Gallet revamped the model in the 1970s with a slightly larger case, Landeron movement and restylised bigger logo. The current lot is a second generation of the earlier rendition of the FO and retains many of the features that are typical of those early models. A particular quirk of the early Flying Officers is the spelling of international cities - from Tokio to Bagdad, San Francisko to Fidji - collectors are regularly left scratching their hands as to the origins of these designations but the consistency of their appearance reinforces that these typos are correct and original. In particular the spelling 'Bagdad' seems to relate just to those with Venus 150 calibres. The records of Gallet were reportedly destroyed in the 1970s thus leading to much independent research by enthusiasts to whom thanks are given for this footnote.
