Paul Signac (French, 1863-1935) Saint-Tropez, Les Tartanes stamped with signature 'P. Signac' (Lugt 2285b; lower right); watermarked with a caduceus and the initials EB (upper right) watercolor and pencil on paper sheet size 15.6 x 19.7 cm (6 1/8 x 7 3/4 in). framed 30.5 x 34.3 x 2.5 cm (12 x 13 1/2 x 1 in). Footnotes: Provenance A private German collection. Sale, Sotheby's, London, June 28, 1978, lot 139. A private collection. Sale, Sotheby's, London, Impressionist and Modern Art and Ceramics, October 25, 1995, lot 13. The present private collection (acquired from the previous). N.B. Signac was one of the most influential artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. He played a crucial part in the development of numerous painting schools and styles, including Pointillism, Neo-Impressionism, Fauvism, and Cubism. He was a particularly important inspiration for and patron of the early 20th-century Fauves and Cubists. Signac was born in Paris and determined to study art at a young age. His earliest influences were Claude Monet and Georges Seurat, whom he met at age 21. Monet may have ignited Signac's passion for art, but it was Seurat alongside whom he began to incorporate the high-contrast colors and precise brushstrokes of Pointillism. Just a few years later, Signac met and became close with Vincent van Gogh and Toulouse Lautrec. The impact of these two artists on his work is evident: on top of the looseness of Impressionism and the scientific precision of Pointillism, Signac now began to incorporate a unique freeness of color and line. The present work was painted in Saint-Tropez, where Signac spent each summer beginning in the 1890s. The Mediterranean coast was one of his favorite subjects and a perfect vehicle for the bright colors which he preferred. Many of his paintings depict various locations in and around the Mediterranean. The authenticity of this work has been confirmed via in-person examination by Marina Ferretti.
