John Charlton, RBA, RI, ROI (British, 1849-1917) The Fox Hunt signed and dated 'John Charlton / 1880' (lower left) oil on canvas 127.0 x 102.0 cm (50 x 40 3/16 in). framed 145.0 x 120.0 x 6.0 cm (57 1/16 x 47 1/4 x 2 3/8 in). Footnotes: N.B. John Charlton was born in Northumberland and began taking drawing lessons at age four. As a young man he began to earn a reputation throughout the Tyneside area as a competent painter of dogs and horses. His first exhibition at the Royal Academy came in 1870 with a military painting, and the success of this debut led him to move to London to pursue his painting career. He became a well-known painter of military scenes and produced many depictions of British colonial campaigns of the late-19th century. World War I, however, brought the immense tragedy of war out from the canvas and into Charlton's life. In 1916, both of his sons were killed in action just one week apart. Two now-last portraits depict the young men before their deaths, marking some of the last works that Charlton would paint. He died one year later in 1917. The present work depicts a subject for which Charlton was much sought after in the earlier periods of his career: dogs and horses. His lively brushstrokes, subdued palette, and effective use of perspective bring the viewer right into the scene and vividly evoke the excitement and action of the hunt. His skill at depicting action would serve him well in his later career as a successful military painter.
