Grunchec, Les Concours des Prix de Rome 1797-1863, Paris, Ecole nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, 1986, 2 vol., p. 77 Son of the renowned artist Jean-Pierre Norblin de La Gourdaine (1745-1830), Sébastien-Louis-Wilhelm Norblin de la Gourdaine (called 'Sobeck'), continued the family's artistic tradition, focusing primarily on historical and genre scenes. A pupil of M. Regnault he participate at the Prix de Rome competition in 1822 where he was first successful to the initial judging with the Death of Tullus Hostilius and then participated to the last judging with the present painting. The preparatory of this painting, formerly attributed to Auguste-Hyacinthe Debay or de Bay (1804-18865), is conserved to the Ecole National des Beaux Arts, Paris (inv. PC 18081-1822-1, see P. Grunchec, Les Concours des Prix de Rome 1797-1863, Paris, Ecole nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, 1986, 2 vol., p. 78, pl. 4) His style shows the influence of both neoclassicism and early romanticism, reflecting the transitional aesthetic currents of his time. Though specific paintings from the Salon 1822 exhibition are not extensively documented, his participation highlights his engagement with the official art world of post-Napoleonic France.
