NAMCHEONG (CIRCA 1846) H.M.S. Childers off Wampoa Reach Oil on canvas, label to reverse to reverse states 'H.M.S. Childers Commissioned in 1846 to 1849 by Comdr. John Charles Pitman who was present during the operations in China in 1841', carved wood frame. 45cm (17 3/4in) high x 57cm (22 1/2in) wide Footnotes: 南昌 約一八四六年 黃埔河灣之英國皇家海軍船 布面油畫 木雕框 Provenance: Sotheby's London, 23 October 1991, lot 351 Martyn Gregory, London, acquired April 1999 Published, Illustrated and Exhibited: Martyn Gregory, From China to the West: catalogue 74, Hong Kong and London, 1999, p.91, no.111 The ship is shown with its sails draped out to dry. H.M.S. Childers was a brig-sloop launched on 23гd August 1827. She was 385 tons and carried 16 guns. Commander Pitman was in command from February 1846. She was decommissioned in 1865. Buyers' Premium and Charges


For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:

Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.

A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.

VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
