LAMQUA (ACTIVE 1825-1860) Portrait of a Gentleman Oil on canvas, carved gilt wood frame. 24cm (9 1/2in) high x 20.5cm (8 1/8in) wide. Footnotes: 啉呱 紳士肖像 布面油畫 漆金木框 Provenance: Martyn Gregory, London Published, Illustrated and Exhibited: Martyn Gregory, A China Voyage: Historical Pictures by Chinese and Western Artists, 1780-1950, catalogue 79, London, 2002, p.36, cat.35 (catalogued as Chinnery (1774-1852)); Martyn Gregory, Reflections of the East, catalogue 87, 2011-12, no. 35. This portrait potentially represents Thomas Chay Beale, son of Thomas Chay Beale (c.1810-57) who went on to enjoy a successful career in Shanghai. Although often described as Thomas Beale's cousin, he is identified by Harriett Low as the latter's illegitimate son, 'educated in England, and visits the best society here' (entry for 27 March 1832). Another possible candidate is Daniel Beale the younger (1798-1827), Thomas Beale's nephew, who died in Macau in 1827. Buyers' Premium and Charges
For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:
Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.
