c.1949 Ariel 750cc 'Brough Superior' Evocation Registration no. NJO 885 Frame no. RF1813 Engine no. MTS/V 2337/2 (see text) •Mainly Ariel cycle parts •JAP v-twin engine •Sturmey Archer gearbox •'Last-nut-and-bolt' restoration completed in 2024 •Requires running-in While, inevitably, it is George Brough's more expensive and exotic models that have captured the motorcycling public's imagination - in particular the high performance SS100 - the fact that the Nottingham manufacturer also produced a range of smaller, cheaper models is often overlooked. For 1928 Brough introduced 'The SS80's Younger Brother', the JAP-powered 750 Side-Valve tourer, which would appear to be the inspiration for the handsome and unique motorcycle offered here. According to our vendor, the machine was discovered some 15-plus years ago in a partially disassembled condition and then slowly and painstakingly restored to 'better-than-new' condition, most of the work being carried out by a previous owner. Completed in 2024, the 'Brough' is a combination of (mainly) Ariel cycle parts, a JAP v-twin engine, and a Sturmey Archer gearbox. Zero miles have been covered since the rebuild's completion. The engine's number stamping indicates that it is a 750cc twin of short-stroke sports (or special) specification, built in 1936. An additional engine stamp, '384W044', is visible with signs of over-stamping. In 1949, Ariel's 'RF' frame prefix was used across multiple capacities, including the 350cc NG and NH models, as well as the 500cc VG/VH and 600cc VB variants. The 347cc capacity listed on the current V5C Registration Certificate and HPI suggests that the frame originally belonged to a '350' model. The (Oxford) registration dates from 1949. A sheet of notes on file states that the engine has been 'fully rebuilt tried and tested ready for a larger carburettor when run in' and that only ethanol-free fuel or a Spitfire Fuel Catalyst should be used. The lubrication system is 'total loss' and 'Morrisons' (presumably Morris) 50W oil is recommended. Other notable features include a new Lucas magneto, new-old-stock Levis forks, new exhausts, new-old-stock Smiths speedometer, and 6-volt electrics (disconnected when not in use). The sheet also lists the starting instructions. It should be noted that there are no receipts or invoices available relating to the restoration; accordingly, prospective purchasers should satisfy themselves with regard to the nature of the machine's components and its overall condition prior to bidding. A beautifully presented evocation that captures the spirit of a true Brough Superior but at a fraction of the cost. Viewing highly recommended. Footnotes: All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.
