Property of a deceased's estate 1973 Norton 745cc Commando MkIV Interstate Registration no. NKA 231M Frame no. 202641 Engine no. 202641 •Present ownership since 2009 •4,455 miles recorded (believed since restoration) •Last used some six years ago •Requires recommissioning The Commando's vibration-beating Isolastic frame enabled Norton Villiers successfully to prolong the life of their ageing parallel twin. Launched in 1967, the Commando used the preceding Featherbed-framed Atlas model's 750cc engine and AMC gearbox, and was an instant hit with the motorcycling public, being voted Motor Cycle News 'Machine of the Year' for five consecutive years. It might have been a little down in top speed compared to rivals such as BSA-Triumph's 750cc triples and Honda's CB750 four, but the Commando more than made up for this minor deficiency with superior mid-range torque and steadier handling. Progressively developed, the Commando appeared in MkIV specification for 1972, coincidentally with introduction of a new model - the Interstate - which featured the high-performance Combat engine and a distinctive large-capacity fuel tank. A Lockheed front disc brake and flashing indicators were standard equipment on this top-of-the-range model. Unfortunately, the early Combat engines were prone to failure when worked hard, resulting in extensive warranty claims and necessitating changes to the main bearings, camshaft, ignition points, compression ratio, and overall gearing in order to sought out the problems. Production returned to normal in 1973. A Norton Owners Club dating letter on file confirms that the machine offered here was despatched from the factory on 6th November 1973 to agents Arthur Hicklin & Co Ltd, Lark Lane, Liverpool. The late owner purchased the Commando in January 2009 (receipt on file). Clearly well maintained, 'NKA 231M' currently displays a total of 4,455 miles on the odometer, which is believed to be the distance covered since restoration, and is presented in nice condition. The Norton was last taxed until 31st March 2015, while the last of the old MoTs on file expired on 6th April 2018. Having been unused for some half-a-dozen years, the machine will need some degree of recommissioning before returning to the road and is therefore sold strictly as viewed (the engine turns over). Additional documentation consists of a V5C Registration Certificate; a quantity of bills and invoices; an owner's manual; a parts list; and DVLA SORN correspondence. Two keys are present: one ignition and one top yoke (no steering lock key). Footnotes: All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.
