Circle of Sir Godfrey Kneller (Lübeck 1646-1723 London) Portrait of Count Henry of Nassau Auverquerque, Marshal d'Auverquerque (1641-1708), three-quarter length, standing, wearing armour and holding a baton, a helmet on a ledge to the left bears inscription 'COUNT HENRY OF NASSAU AUVERQUERQUE/ MARSHAL D'AUVERQUERUE' (lower left) oil on canvas 121.2 x 102.4cm (47 11/16 x 40 5/16in). framed: 140.7 x 122.4cm Footnotes: Provenance The Collection of Sir Elton John, London His sale, Sotheby's, London, 30 September 2003, lot 11 Where purchased by the present owner Count Henry of Naussau Auverquerque was the third son of Louis, count of Nassau, and second cousin to William III. Nassau saved the life of William III during the Battle of Saint-Denis in 1678, and was subsequently made Captain and accompanied William III on the majority of his following campaigns. He was promoted to General in 1697. Nassau married Isabella van Aersen, daughter of Cornelius, lord of Sommelsdyck and Plaata, with whom he had six children. Another version of this portrait is in the Oranje-Nassau Museum, Delft. Buyers' Premium and Charges


For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:

Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
