A William IV silver plate John Houle, London 1833 Shaped-circular, gadroon rim interspered with acanthus and anthemion, with two engraved armorials to the border for SHERIDAN and GRANT, diameter 26cm, weight 22.3oz. Footnotes: Firstly the armorial without supporters: This is the armorial of Richard Brinsley SHERIDAN (1810-1885) and his wife Marcia Maria Grant BROWNE (1815-1884) of Frampton Court, Dorset. The couple were married in 1835 at Arthuret, Longtown, Cumberland (Gretna Green), shortly after the assay date of 1833. Richard Brinsley SHERIDAN junior was the son of Thomas Hollius Linley SHERIDAN (1775-1817) and his wife Caroline Henrietta CALLENDER (1779-1851). He was the grandson of the infamous Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1751–1816) an Irish playwright and owner of the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. Marcia Maria GRANT-BROWNE was the only surviving child and heir of Lieutenant General Colquhoun GRANT (1774-1835) and his wife Marcia RICHARDS (1778-1818). Secondly the armorial that includes supporters. This the military armorial of Lieutenant General Colquhoun GRANT (1774-1835) KCB GCH of Frampton Court, Dorset. He was the son of Ludovick GRANT (1726-1795) of Abernethy Strathspey, a missionary and clergyman, by Margaret DAVIDSON (died 1817). An army officer of some note having as a Colonel of the 15th Kings Hussars seen action at Seringapatam, Corunna and Waterloo. He inherited Frampton Court, Dorset from a distant relative of the BROWNE family. In 1831 he served as MP for Queensborough. In 1810 in London he married Marcia RICHARDS and it is their daughter who is identified above. It appears that this was originally an item intended for the use of Colquhoun GRANT at Frampton Court, where he lived with his daughter Marcia Maria, detailed above. His arms would therefore have appeared first. Marcia Maria in 1835 married clandestinely Richard Brinsley SHERIDAN and on the death of Colquhoun GRANT, at the end of the same year, inherited through his wife the estate of Frampton Court. It is expected that the Richard Brinsley SHERIDAN's was then added. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com For further information about this lot please visit the lot listing
