Miles Davis (American, 1926-1991): Abstract Drawing of a Figure, 1990s, coloured pens on card, signed Miles lower left in pen, framed and glazed, sheet: 13 1/2in x 11in (35.3cm x 28cm); frame: 30in x 24in (76.5cm x 62.5cm) Footnotes: Following a period of ill health in 1982, where Miles Davis lost movement in his hand due to a stroke, it was recommended that he take up drawing as a method of improving the recovery of his hand when he was not playing music. This began a long relationship with art that began as small sketches and developed into large colour drawings and canvases. This sketch is rendered with a light, delicate touch, revealing Davis' deep appreciation for the human form. There are also subtle references to his African heritage within this artwork through the use of colour and stylisation of the form. Provenance: Soly by Jo. A Gelbard via Balmain Fine Arts Gallery, 7th April 2005, where purchased by the present owner. Sold without copyright. All reproduction rights remain with the Estate of Miles Davis, and Jo Gelbard. Buyers' Premium and Charges
For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:
Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.
