Two Chelsea 'Hans Sloane' botanical plates, circa 1755-57
Two Chelsea 'Hans Sloane' botanical plates, circa 1755-57 Of silver-shape with a brown-edged rim, decorated with exuberant plant specimens, the anemone accompanied by two butterflies in flight, 21.5cm diam, red anchor to the sunflower plate (2) Footnotes: While discussing a similar plate in her book, Sir Hans Sloane's Plants on Chelsea Porcelain (2015), Sally Kevill-Davies notes that the anemone flower is not depicted on its own stem but on one with amaranthus leaves. The Chelsea painters took artistic license with their specimens in order to better fill the porcelain they were working on, prioritising attractiveness over biological accuracy. Similar depictions of sunflowers (Helianthus sp.) are found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 2016.221, and the British Museum, Acc. 1940,1101.66. The latter depicts Helianthus atrorubens L. (Kevill-Davies, 2015, pp.128-9) whilst the present lot seemingly depicts a different species. At the time of production, many sunflower species had been imported into Britain since first arriving in the 16th century, and were a familiar sight in English gardens.
