ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR FOR THE COVER OF THE UGLY DUCKLING. ANDERSEN, HANS CHRISTIAN. 1805-1875. HOYTEMA, THEO VAN, illustrator. Preliminary study for the cover of Het Leelijke jonge eendje (The Ugly Duckling, 1893), pen and pencil and watercolor wash in shades of blue, green, brown, yellow, red, and black, titled and annotated in ink, 283 x 230 mm, signed by Hoytema lower right in illustration, c. 1893, matted and framed to 420 x 370 mm. Van Hoytema's illustrated edition of The Ugly Duckling was first published in Dutch in 1893, then in English in London in 1894. Van Hoytema (1863-1917) was the most significant Dutch designer and lithographer at the end of the nineteenth century. A founder of the Art Nouveau movement in the Netherlands, Van Hoytema's lithography is still considered the best work produced there, and his The Ugly Duckling one of his most important works. 'The real break-through book for Hoytema, however, was Het leelijke jonge Eendje, Hans Christian Andersen's Ugly Duckling, of 1893, in which a balance between close observation and cloisonné-like stylization is fully achieved and the hand-written text is beautifully integrated with the drawn images' (Ackley, 'A Hoytema Archive in Boston,' Print Quarterly, 2011). See Niemeijer 1977, p 44, cat.nr.T11.
