Bernie Krause (b. 1938) Day & Night in Gombe, 2025 Pen drive with custom audio originally recorded (1990) by soundscape ecologist Bernie Krause in Gombe. Presented in a linen display box. Footnotes: A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own an artistic tribute to the birthplace of Jane Goodall's legacy. In honor of the 65th anniversary of Dr. Jane Goodall's groundbreaking research in Gombe, world-renowned soundscape artist Bernie Krause offers an extraordinary, exclusive audio mix capturing the essence of this historic site. Having traveled to Gombe in the early 1990s to record its rich biophony, Krause has spent decades transforming natural soundscapes—from scientific field data into acclaimed works of art. His collaborations with the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain have been exhibited globally, and the foundation recently acquired his natural sound archive as a work of art in its own right. Day & Night in Gombe is a 30+ minute composition in surround WAV format, following the natural rhythm of a single day in Gombe in August 1990. It begins at dawn, with birdsong and the calls of baboons announcing the sunrise. As the day unfolds, chimpanzees vocalize alongside a chorus of birds, weaving a sonic tapestry of the research station's vibrant and diverse ecosystem. As evening falls, the landscape quiets. Along the Gombe Stream, a lone baboon offers a final call before settling for the night. From the shores of Lake Tanganyika, fishers gather—voices rising in song as they prepare for the evening's work. As night deepens, the gentle chorus of crickets recedes, leaving only the rhythmic lapping of freshwater waves against the shoreline—a timeless echo of Gombe's nocturnal world. About Bernie Krause. Since 1968, Bernie Krause has traveled the world recording and archiving the sounds of creatures and environments, large and small. Working at the primate research sites of Jane Goodall (Tanzania), Biruté Galdikas (Camp Leakey, Borneo), and Dian Fossey (Karisoke, Rwanda), he identified the concept of biophony—how individual species establish frequency and temporal bandwidth, vocalizing collectively within a given habitat. His pioneering work laid the foundation for soundscape ecology, a new bioacoustic discipline. Krause has produced over 50 natural soundscape albums and has created interactive environmental sound installations for museums and public spaces worldwide. More recently, his exhibitions have appeared through the Fondation Cartier in Paris, Lille, London, Milan, Shanghai, Seoul, Sydney, and on both coasts of the United States. His latest work is scheduled to open at the Palais Royal, Paris, in Autumn 2025.
