ROYALTY - VICTORIA AND ALBERT ALBERT (Prince) The Principal Speeches and Addresses of His Royal Highness The Prince Consort [edited by Sir Arthur Helps], PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY QUEEN VICTORIA 'For Andrew Toward Esq in remembrance of His great & good & beloved master from His broken hearted widow Queen Victoria, Osborne, Christmas Eve 1862' on the front free endpaper, engraved frontispiece portrait of Albert, publisher's cloth gilt, t.e.g., age soiled, 8vo, John Murray, 1862; with 3 autograph letters, 2 from Toward, one from Alfred Hearn relating to Royal matters (4) Footnotes: PRESENTATION COPY OF PRINCE ALBERT'S SPEECHES INSCRIBED FROM 'HIS BROKEN HEARTED WIDOW QUEEN VICTORIA' on Christmas Eve 1862, Albert having died the previous December. She spent Christmas at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, writing in her diary for this day ''Alas! Xmas Eve & all the joy I used to take in it gone! [...] Felt terribly sad & low. The contrast with former happy blessed times, seemed almost more than I could bear'. The book is inscribed to Andrew Toward (1796-1881), the head gardener and Estate manager at Osborne since the 1840s. The letters with the lot relate to enquiries sent (from his home at Barton House, nr. Osborne, in May 1865) by Toward at the request of Queen Victoria, to the owner of Great East Standen on the Isle of Wight asking for information on the house's history and Royal connections. Buyers' Premium and Charges
For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:
Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.
VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
