FARADAY (MICHAEL) Five autograph letters signed ('M Faraday') to his nephew William Gray, the first congratulating him on his engagement ('...May you grow ever together in all the happy family joy...'), others making arrangements to meet ('...My wife is so much under the influence of a coming cold that she has taken her breakfast in bed...'), 5 pages, dust-staining, marks, small holes, first letter with loss to right hand corner, not affecting text, 8vo; a further six from his wife Sarah signed ('S Faraday'), also to William Gray, congratulating him on the birth of his son with autograph note signed by Faraday on reverse ('...My heartiest congratulations...'), others making arrangements, family news and mentioning a trip to the Surrey hills ('...your Uncle enjoyed it as much as his failing powers allow...'), 10 pages, dust-staining and creasing, 8vo, Royal Institution, Hampton Court and elsewhere, 14 June 1862 to 1 March 1864 where dated Footnotes: A series of affectionate family letters from Michael and Sarah Faraday to their nephew William Gray (1832-1881), the son of Michael's sister Elizabeth. Gray married Emily Deacon on 13 September 1862. The week before their marriage Sarah Faraday wrote to Mary Deacon commenting on the '...serious difference in their age – 12 years on the wrong side – but we are very well pleased on the whole...' (Correspondence, vol.6, 2011, Faraday4218). Gray is listed in various census returns as a gas fitter, brass finisher and metal worker. The Faradays at this time lived in a grace and favour house, The Green, on the river at Hampton Court. By 1862, Faraday had just given his last Christmas lectures at the Royal Institution and his last discourse and, in 1864, declined the post of president of the Institution, viewing himself as its servant rather than a figurehead. In declining health, he died at Hampton Court in August 1867 (Frank A.J.L. James, ODNB). Provenance: William Gray (1832-1881); thence by descent to the present owner.
