MANUSCRIPT - COOKERY & HOUSEHOLD Three nineteenth century manuscript receipt books, written in several hands, the first including some 180 recipes such as 'A Drest Crab, either hot or cold', 'To make Angel Puddings', 'Dutch Flummery', 'Fairy Butter', 'Floating Island', 'To make Indian Pickle', 'Small birds in Savory Jelly', 'Thatched House Pie', 'Purging Pills', 'Receipt for a Cough', 'Indelible Ink', manuscript armorial of Simon Aris of the Inner Temple affixed to first leaf, c.70 pages, dust-staining and marks, original marbled boards, worn, 4to (230 x 185mm.), first half nineteenth century; the second containing over 160 receipts, such as 'Dr Crowthers' Pudding for an Invalid', 'Lemon Solid', 'Ackworth School Yeast', 'Scent Pot', 'Treacle Parkin', 'Blacking', 'Strengthening Jelly', 'To make Shoes Water-Proof', 'Jenny Lind Pudding', 'Directions for keeping Tile Pavement clean, 2 July 1867', 'Welcome Guest Pudding', many attributed ('Mrs Speight', 'Mrs Woollen', 'Mrs Micklethwait'), index, with numerous additional receipts loosely inserted, 30 pages, dust-staining and marks, some leaves loose, original tartan-decorated boards, worn, upper cover detached, lacking spine, 4to (235 x 190mm.); the third dated 'July 1875' on inside front board, with some 40 pages of receipts including 'Shrewsbury Cakes', 'Manchester Pudding', 'Jam Sandwiches', etc., many attributed ('Miss Bell', 'Mrs E. Lloyd'), index, c.40 pages, dust-staining and marks, original marbled boards, worn with loss, 4to (226 x 178mm.), [nineteenth century] (3) Footnotes: The second item includes a copy of an 'Analysis of Water from our Cistern at the Kitchen Fire', for a Mr Hoyland, Western Bank, Sheffield, and dated 29 March 1851, which declares it 'quite free from lead or other injurious impregnation'. This may well be the family of portrait painter Henry George Hoyland (1895-1947), whose father George ran a hairdressing business from the family home. Buyers' Premium and Charges


For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:

Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.

A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.

VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
