Bryan Wynter (British, 1915-1975) Freshet signed, titled and dated 'BRYAN WYNTER/'FRESHET' 1959' (verso) oil on canvas 101.5 x 81.5 cm. (39 7/8 x 32 in.) Footnotes: Provenance With Gillian Jason Gallery, London With 3812 Gallery, London With Alan Wheatley Fine Art, London, where acquired by the present owners The title of the present work, Freshet, refers to the sudden rush of water into rivers and streams caused by snowmelt, which conjures an image bristling with energy and movement. Wynter often drew on natural themes for his titles, though his paintings rarely lend themselves to literal interpretation. Instead, they evoke the rhythms and dynamism of the natural world through abstract means. Wynter lived and worked for much of his life in Zennor, a small village on the Cornish coast, surrounded by a landscape of exposed granite, moorland, and sea. While this rugged, and ever-changing environment helped shape his visual language, his approach to painting was far from spontaneous. Though he began new works without a fixed plan, his process was measured and methodical. Typically, Wynter would start with a dense layer of dark, linear marks, then refine the composition by painting over sections with flat household undercoat or translucent glaze, allowing some forms to fade away and others to glow through. Over time (often over weeks or months), further layers of brush marks were added, both bold and delicate, allowing the composition to gradually take shape. Wynter often listened to new jazz releases while he worked, and there are clear affinities between his painting and the musical genre. Much like the music he admired, his painting unfolds through improvisation but remains grounded in discipline and technical control. As with many artists of his generation, Wynter was drawn from an early age to the freedom and vitality of American jazz, and its influence can be felt in the rhythm of his mark-making, the layered structure of his compositions, and the interplay between spontaneity and restraint.
