ENRICA MEDUGNO Two drifters (off to see the world)2013 41.8 x 32 cm. framed
ENRICA MEDUGNO Two drifters (off to see the world) 2013 Photographic print 41.8 x 32 cm. framed Footnotes: Enrica Medugno (b.1992, Italy) first experimented with photography in 2013 on a trip to China, where she was inspired by the people and bustling streets of Shanghai. This, combined with her previous role as cataloguer in the photography department at Chiswick Auction House, has led to a passion for the medium, particularly the subject of street photography, which is reflected in the present lot. Enrica took the present photograph on that first formative trip to China. Whilst looking for a place to eat, she spotted a solitary traveller writing in his travel journal, and something about this scene moved her. Perhaps it was the fact that they were both travellers in a faraway land. And yet, he didn't look lonely to her. Instead, she wondered if he was searching for something: a new land, new people, a new life, or maybe himself. What might his life look like now, where has he travelled to, who has he met? Did he love China as much as her? Was he happy? Is he happy now? Although we will never know the answers, this photograph is a reassuring and yet nostalgic image that never fails to take the artist back to that Sunday in Hangzhou. For Enrica, this is the beauty of street photography: the chance to connect with strangers, even for a second; to see the beauty in these moments and the possibility to keep them forever frozen in our memories.
