A RARE THOMAS HOLBROOK NEW ENGLAND FOWLER AND TWO ASSOCIATED POWDER HORNS. Sherborn, Massachusetts, dated 1784. 51 in., .62 caliber barrel, the octagonal breech with worn foliate engraving on the top and sighting flat extending from the rear notch sight to just forward of the silver blade front sight; flat lock plate, converted to percussion, with stepped and pointed tail engraved with a stylized shell and signed in front of the cock 'Holbrook' in neatly engraved script; cherry stock with deeply concave butt and fine comb, worn foliate carving around the breech plug tang, carved plateau around the lock mortice and side plate panel, subtle line relief carving along the barrel and rammer channels; the wrist with a worn oval silver thumb piece with faint 1784 date in the center, later lightly scratched initials 'DD' and engraved wreath decoration around the border; brass butt plate with engraved shell and foliate decoration on the narrow tang, trigger guard with pointed finials and bow engraved with a panoply of arms, engraved 'cloud' form side plate, and four long sheet brass rammer pipes securing a wood rammer; along with a powder horn with simple compass decoration, initials 'SD' and dated 1756; and a second powder horn with a lightly carved image of a sailing ship near the base. Overall lg. 66 3/4 in. Condition: The fowler survives in very nice untouched condition, barrel and lock are toned to deep brown with light pitting around the breech; stock has old surface and old tight cracks in the lock area as well as a few small losses along the barrel channel; brass furniture is toned to deep yellow/brown, lock does not hold in the full-cock position. Footnotes: Provenance The fowler and powder horns descended through the Davenport family of Mendon, Massachusetts. The 1756-dated horn initialed 'SD' belonged to Seth Davenport (1739-1814). Seth was born in Milton, Massachusetts, moved with his family to Mendon in the 1740s and became a successful farmer. Note Thomas Holbrook (1747-1810) was a Sherborn, Massachusetts, gunsmith whose fowlers a known for their lightness and sleek lines.
