Masato Sato, the artisan who crafted this amazing pen is one of a collection of esteemed artists working in the famed Kokkokai studios. Currently, seventeen artisans are actively contributing to the Kokkokai collective, each bringing a unique artistic signature to their work, with the 'Emperor' collection typically representing the highest level of craftsmanship by the artisans. While the group is predominantly male, more than a quarter are women, reflecting a growing diversity in this prestigious circle. The name Kokkokai was inspired by a powerful message from Ryosuke Namiki during the group's founding in August 1931. He likened Maki-e to Japan's national sport, Sumo, declaring that 'Maki-e is the nation's light.' In Japanese, Kokko means 'light,' and thus, Kokkokai translates to the 'National Light Society.' As Pilot explains, the name embodies the belief that Maki-e represents the cultural brilliance of Japan, with the aspiration to let its radiance shine across the globe. The owl, revered in Japanese culture as a symbol of intelligence and insight, is brought to life in shimmering detail against a midnight backdrop. A crescent moon and scattered raden stars adorn the cap, evoking a quiet, starlit forest where the owl reigns as a silent sentinel. Encased in a Japanese oak presentation box with a carved owl motif, and paired with a custom bottle of ink, this pen is not only a writing instrument but a collector's treasure, ideal for those who value artistry, symbolism, and the elegance of Japanese lacquerware.
