Hamed Nada (Egypt, 1924-1990) Ancient Egyptian Goddess Nut
Hamed Nada (Egypt, 1924-1990) Ancient Egyptian Goddess Nut oil on board, framed executed circa 1970s 48 x 68cm (18 7/8 x 26 3/4in). Footnotes: Provenance: Gift from the artist to the Swiss Cottage Hotel, Alexandria Acquired by the present owner from the above The Swiss Cottage Hotel, located in the prestigious Glim district of Alexandria, was a prominent destination in the early 20th century, known for its luxurious accommodations and grand architecture. Situated near the Faculty of Fine Arts, the hotel became a popular gathering place for artists and intellectuals of the time. Among them was the renowned Egyptian artist Hamed Nada, who frequently stayed at the hotel and, in appreciation, gifted it several of his paintings. Favoured by both affluent travellers and Alexandrian elites seeking a touch of European-style elegance, the hotel embodied the city's cosmopolitan charm during a golden era. Though its design is not extensively documented, it was widely admired and likely reflected prevailing European architectural influences. While the hotel is no longer in operation, it remains a symbol of Alexandria's refined past, a time marked by artistic exchange, sophistication, and cultural vitality along the Mediterranean coast. This artwork depicts Nut, the ancient Egyptian goddess of the sky, who in mythology is often portrayed as a woman arching over the earth, embodying the heavens. In this painting, Hamed Nada draws on traditional iconography to represent Nut in her characteristic arched pose, visually capturing her cosmic role and symbolic presence within Egyptian mythology.
