Épée ottomane en acier (kilij), Turquie, XVIème/XVIIème siècle. An Ottoman steel sword (kilij) Turkey, 16th/ 17th Century the single-edged steel blade of slightly curved form becoming double edged towards the point at the yelman, inscription-filled cartouche to one side, the wood grips clad in leather with two domed studs, steel pommel, the cross-guard of slightly flaring form terminating in cusped-quillons 95 x 17 x 5 cm. A sword with a comparable blade dated to the 15th/ 16th Century is in the Royal Armouries collection, Leeds (object number XXVIS.293), though the yelman of the present lot extends further up the blade which would suggest a slightly later date. The hilt, with the offset cap pommel, and cross-guard with broad quillons are of forms which suggest that they may be contemporary with the blade.
