76th Regiment of Foot Victorian Officers shoulder belt plate circa 1848-55. A fine scarce example. Seeded gilt rectangular plate with burnished edges mounted with large silver facetted Maltese cross with rays between the arms; mounted on the cross, a gilt wreath, half of laurel, half of palm surmounted by a crown resting on a scroll inscribed ""Hindoostan"" with further scroll below inscribed ""Nive"". To the centre, a silver elephant over LXXVI. On the lower arm of the cross, a gilt scroll inscribed ""Peninsula"". Reverse retains original fixings comprising two hooks and two studs and complete with leather liner. Minor service wear, generally VGC. Became 2nd Bn. Duke of Wellingtons West Riding Regiment on Friday 1st July 1881
