Indian Army. 42nd Madras Native Infantry Victorian Officers ""Albert"" shako plate circa 1844-55. A very fine rare fire-gilt example. Ten pointed star, the topmost point displaced by a crown; mounted on the star, a wreath half laurel, half palm, enclosing a strap inscribed ""Madras Native Infantry"" with seeded ""XLII"" to burnished gilt centre. Two horizontal loops to reverse. Bottom ray slightly shortened for continued service on the 1856 pattern shako; top pearl AF otherwise VGC. Raised in 1803 as 4th Extra Battalion of Madras Native Infantry becoming 2nd Bn. 21st Regiment of Madras Native Infantry the following year. Redesignated 42nd Regiment of Madras Native Infantry in 1824 and disbanded 1864.
