Within a crowned laurel wreath, the Garter; the seeded centre pierced with stencilled ?54?. Mounted on the base of the wreath, a silver Sphinx resting on a tablet inscribed ?Marabout?. Two loops to reverse. VGC Became 2nd Bn Dorsetshire Regiment on 1st July 1881. ?Marabout? granted in December 1841. Believed to be the actual piece photographed as No. 165 in ?Head-dress Badges of the British Army?.
