South African Prince Alfred`s Own Cape Volunteer Artillery plate circa 1870-99.

A good scarce example. White metal Cape Arms with scroll below inscribed `26 August 1857`. Below the scroll, a gun resting on a scroll `P.A.O.C.V. Artillery`. Three loops to reverse. Generally VGC.

Cape Town Volunteer Artillery formed at the Town House, Greenmarket Square, Cape Town 26th August 1857, thus the oldest volunteer artillery unit in the world after the HAC. Its first commanding officer was a Portuguese nobleman, Major Chevalier Alfredo Duprat. During the Royal Visit of HRH Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh in 1867, the Prince was most impressed by the regiment and he decreed the unit should carry the additional title `Prince Alfred`s Own`. Unusually for an artillery unit, it was presented with a King`s Colour in 1904.
