Scottish. Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) Victorian Officer s shoulder belt plate circa 1881-1901.

A good scarce example by R & HB Kirkwood, 66 & 68 Thistle St. Edinburgh and bearing their thistle logo to reverse. Seeded gilt rectangular plate with raised burnished edges; mounted on the plate, a facetted silver Star of the Order of the Thistle; mounted on the Star, a gilt thistle wreath, within the wreath a crowned oval bearing the motto of the Order of the Thistle (Lacesset). To the centre, St. Andrew and the Cross in silver, below the wreath, a gilt Sphinx. The Crown flanked by silver scrolls inscribed The Royal Highlanders . The Sphinx flanked by silver scroll Black Watch . Reverse retains original fixings comprising two hooks and two studs. Service wear. GC
