41st Foot (The Welsh) pre 1855 Officer's shoulder belt plate.. A very fine example. Seeded fire gilt rectangular plate with burnished edges; mounted on the plate, a cut silver eight pointed star; mounted on the star, a gilt crowned Garter resting within a laurel wreath. Within the Garter, silver Prince of Wales' plumes set on a silvered ground, (usually blue enamel) between the Garter and the base of the wreath 'XLI' with 'Niagara' and 'Ava' below and 'Queenstown' above. On the left of the wreath, a scroll inscribed 'Detroit'; on the right another 'Miami'. Reverse retains original fixings comprising two hooks and two studs. . During the latter period this plate was worn the 41st were commanded by Hugh Rowlands VC, KCB. The 1st Battalion fought at Alma, Inkerman and throughout the Siege of Sevastopol. On the evacuation of the Crimea in 1856 the Regiment proceeded home and then to Jamaica the following year until 1860.
