49th (The Princess Charlotte of Wales's or Hertfordshire) Regiment of Foot Officer's shoulder belt plate circa 1843-55. . A splendid rare example by Tatham, London. Seeded gilt rectangular plate with raised burnished edges; mounted to the centre, a gilt laurel wreath. Within the wreath, a crowned circlet inscribed 'Princess Charlotte of Wales'; to the centre '49' resting on a Union spray with scroll above inscribed 'Hertfordshire'. Battle honours 'Egmont-op-Zee', 'Queenstown' 'China' and 'Copenhagen' entwined in the wreath; below the wreath, the Dragon. Reverse, bearing Fleur de Lis, with original fixings comprising two hooks and two studs and complete with leather liner. VGC (Parkyn 388). Became 1st Bn. Berkshire Regiment on Friday 1st July, 1881.
